You’re having a baby! Congratulations! Now, it’s time to decide on some big-ticket registry items or what you’re going to purchase yourself. I think the most important item on your registry is the car seat! I guess I never really understood how much you use it. Especially, in the first couple of months, just with doctor’s appointments alone.
Why I bought this one:
I knew that I wanted a travel system. It’s a way to get your little one from the car to the stroller without having to take them out at all, which is absolutely amazing because my baby always falls asleep for a car ride. No disturbing nap time for the win!
We went to Buy Buy Baby to “test-drive” a few travel systems and even some jogging strollers. From what I remember, Graco had a pretty nice travel system as well. The Maxi-Cosi was just extremely smooth, easy to turn, and had an attachable bassinet!
The bassinet is definitely the way to go! It enables the baby to lay down instead of being cooped up in the car seat. I use this primarily when we go out for the day or traveling. It’s easy to get her naps in when we’re at the zoo, a park, or whatever we’re doing.
About the Brand:
Maxi-Cosi is a European baby brand that started in the Netherlands in 1984. They claim that they introduced the first baby car seat in Europe! Now, they are one of the leading brands in Europe and are quickly gaining popularity in the U.S. Maxi-Cosi states on their website that 50 million babies have been carried home safely.
Car Seat Features:
The car seat is safe for infants up to 30lbs and 32” tall. I loved that the height went all the way up to 32”. Most car seats have a maximum height of 30”. I knew that my little one was going to be tall since my husband and I both are decently tall. Good thing too. Right now, she’s in the 90th percentile for height. The extra length ensures that we can use it for at least the first year.
Another feature that first-time parents tend to overlook is the weight of the car seat without the base. The Maxi-Cosi only weighs 9lbs! Which is definitely one of the lightest I found out there. You just have to imagine carrying the baby plus the weight of the seat. That adds up quick. We say it’s like lugging around cat litter everywhere you go!
You can also remove the fabric covering of the car seat and wash it! And dry it. It’s extremely simple to get on and off. You wouldn’t think this is a big deal until a blowout happens. Yikes!
And of course the most important part, safety! One of the main features is the side impact protection.
It has an adjustable handle. This might be a big deal 1) If you’re tall or 2) There is a major height difference between you and your spouse. I’m the former as I mentioned previously. It’s a great height for me, where some strollers came a little low. For reference, I’m 5’7.
It’s easy to fold and stands upright on its own. This is definitely a feature that I took for granted until I took my little one shopping by myself. Having it stand up on it’s own allows you to be able to shift things that may be in your trunk before you put it in.
The stroller/toddler seat can be used for children up to 50lbs. I would say this is pretty standard.
It also has a pretty large canopy with a peak-a-boo window to check on your little one.
Features I wish it had:
While it folds up easily, I wish that it was the one button close like some strollers have. It also doesn’t have a cup holder for the baby, but it does come with one for mom or dad.
It also doesn’t covert to a double stroller if you ‘re planning on adding to your family down the road, which is a bummer.
I love this travel system and would definitely recommend it. It’s super easy to use, smooth to maneuver, has a decent size basket at the bottom, and it has the benefits of the car seat/bassinet feature. One downside is that the cup holder is pretty flimsy and has a tendency to fall off if you bump it.
I would also say that it’s pretty reasonably priced coming in at $399.99 considering you’re getting a car seat and a stroller in one.
Where to purchase:
You can find it on Maxi-Cosi’s website, Amazon, Target, Buy Buy Baby, Dillard’s, and other retailers. Tip: You can use the 20% Off Buy Buy Baby Coupon on it! The coupon often excludes some of the more premium brands, but not in this case.
